How to choose the right Java version for Minecraft server?

Java requirements are determined by the version of Minecraft you use, as well as the version of Paper, mod loader, or proxy you use. Check the documentation for each component before installation.

Step by step

  1. Find the Java requirement for the Minecraft version of the jar file you will install from the support table. For example, Java Edition 26.1 requires Java 25. The requirement for older versions may be different.

  2. Run java -version. See which binary the terminal selects with where.exe java on Windows, command -v java on Linux.

  3. If more than one Java is installed, use the full path to the correct executable in the startup file. If you are using a panel, change the selected Java image or version.

  4. Reprint the version and start the jar file in the same startup environment. If the boot error has changed, look at the first new error in the log.

Keep in mind

The Java used by the Player Launcher and the Java used by the separate server process may be different.
