How to move Minecraft server to new host?

When moving a server, world files, plugin data, and network settings change together. Test the new environment before changing the player address.

Step by step

  1. List the Java and Minecraft version, disk usage, plugin databases, and ports on the old server. Prepare compatible operating environment on the new machine.

  2. Notify players of maintenance time. Shut down the old server properly, take a full backup, and transfer the files to a separate directory in the new environment.

  3. Open the new server with the temporary address. Verify player inventory, dimensions, attachments and external network connection. Then change the DNS or advertised address.

  4. Watch the DNS results of the two addresses for a while. Opening the old world to player input to prevent data fragmentation.

Keep in mind

In your return plan, include not only the address but also which world copy is valid at the time.
