How to find and backup Minecraft Nether and End folders?

The location of the Nether and End folders varies depending on the Java version and server software. Don't assume the old directory layout when moving from one version to another.

Step by step

  1. In Vanilla before 26.1, look under the main world in the DIM-1 and DIM1 directories. In Old Paper these are usually under world_nether and world_the_end. Use your world name instead of world.

  2. Check directories dimensions/minecraft/the_nether and dimensions/minecraft/the_end in the main world in the Java 26.1 layout. When moving between Paper and Vanilla, follow the version-specific migration guidance for additional data files outside of dimensions.

  3. Stop the server properly. Store each dimension directory, homeworld, and related settings in the same backup point.

  4. On the restore copy, go to Nether and End and check for a known structure or coordinate. Also try portal redirection.

Keep in mind

Mixing dimension indexes from different backup dates can leave linked portal and player data inconsistent.
